J.D. Jarvis & Rusty York - Rural Rhythm - Blue Grass Gospel Songs<br />
<br />
J.D. Jarvis saw combat in WWII (including taking part in Normandy on D-Day) and won three purple hearts before returning to Clay Co. Kentucky to record somewhere in the ballpark of 45 records. <br />
<br />
Rusty York plays all over this thing. He's from Harlan Co. and I guess ended up with some bigger success in the Rockabilly world but eventually ended up focusing on Bluegrass and Country and later formed Jewell Records run out of Cincinnati. Guessing he's behind the dobro on this - which really rounds this thing out. <br />

Ernest Martin - Road Of No Return<br />
<br />
This isnt the first album Ive posted of Martin - his Pine Tree LP is on here as well and is so good.<br />
<br />
My friend Cassie Lopez lives in Lexington KY and when I found out a copy of this was in the University Library there I asked her if she could check it out and rip it for me - so thanks Cassie! <br />
This record is less bluegrass then the other stuff Ive heard - and the tunes that have Martin on the Organ are particularly nice. Living Where The Milk And Honey Flow - has been on my stereo for a week now.<br />
<br />
Thanks for liberating this from that cold basement Cassie.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally opened this guy up. Nice live show. Back cover reads </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
December 7 1974 was one of the great days for bluegrass fans. Price Enterprises, Inc. gave a benefit show for Charlie Monroe, One of the founders of bluegrass music and also brother to Bill Monroe. The benefit took place at Lake Norman Music Hall in Terrel North Carolina.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Charlie Had been in very poor health so it was quite a shock when he appeared on the stage. To the surprise and amazement of the audience Brother Burch Monroe also made an appearance. The response was unbelievable. People were crying, cheering, and laughing because the sound of the original Monroe Brothers was being seen and heard once again. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I called Bob Davis of Davis Sound Productions in Charlotte and asked him if he would come an tape the show. After convincing Bob that it was the "real" Charlie Monroe he hurried up to Terrel and set up the equipment. This album is a result of that taping session. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
People came from all over to see and hear these old time greats. Paul "Moon" Mullins of WPFB in Middletown, Ohio and Grant Turner of WSMN Nashville were a great help in promoting the show. Many thanks to them and also the other bands to donated their time and talent to make the show a success.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Charlie was born in Rosene, Kentucky and now resides in Reidsville North Carolina with his lovely wife Martha and his pack of fine fox hounds. He plays some show and Bluegrass festivals. His great rapport with an audience comes through even on record. Im sure that after this listening to this album you'll agree with me. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

In June 2011 I went to Joe Bussards house with my buddy Van. We stayed the whole day - went to lunch - watched a couple hours of Laurel and Hardy / W. C. Fields / and a documentary about UFOs.<br />
After that we listened to records and Van eventually asked Joe if he would make him a tape of this unknown artists he had the masters for that he played for us. Van ripped it for me and Im gonna put that up here - hope you enjoy it - only 6 tracks of the man - sometimes two women singing spirituals. Thanks van!<br />

Got a better set up for ripping records so these will sound better.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First record is a compilation from Starday that came out in 1959 called V/A - Preachin' Prayin' Shoutin' And Singin'. Covers real fucked up but it still plays. Some real nice stuff scattered on here. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Second record is on the Outlet Label out of Rocky Mount Virginia (If anyone has any of the weirder stuff on Outlet let me know I wanna track that shit down) My Dude Jim Eanes and his Shenandoah Valley Quartet 1977. Seems like Jim took some of Red Smileys band members after his retirement and used the same band name for this record. Like the cover.</div>

First - Thanks for Matt for getting me a copy of this. One of my favorites. I posted one of Early's records a couple months ago - this one is significantly weirder. . . His then 9 year old daughter sings on a lot of the album - "I wont be an orphan in glory" is an especially heavy one. Back jacket reads...</div>

"This album includes Kath Upchurch's favorites. Lots of these songs are recited by Kathy. In 1966, she won the trophy for the most promising talent. She is loved by the young and old. She has had three records to reach the top in many states. Such songs as: God Forgive Me When I Whine, Jordan River, and Phone Call To Heaven. We believe that some of these songs will repeat. Kathy is now nine (9) years old. She Sincerely hopes that everyone will enjoy this album.</div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Matthew Rigney, is well know through many states for his guitar picking. Also Matthew sings bass or alto sometimes soprano. Matthew is loved by all because of his fine hospitlity (sic). You will hear his electric guitar, which takes many leads in this album. Matthew Rigney, Mount Airy, North Carolina.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Early Upchurch, has been recording gospel records for eight (8) years. Some of his great songs has been : Paul's Ministry, Where the Shades of Love Lie Deep, and I just Dropped By. This particular song was in the top twenty in the month of september 1968. Doris Kidd of Monticello, Kentucky was helping Early on this particular song. Early and Kathy Upchurch travels many thousands of miles each year throughout the country and cities singing the gospel songs. To people that enjoy country hymns, we sincerly hope you people that hear this album get a great blessing from them.</div>

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Snow day Peter Green. Melody Maker magazine said in 1970 that this record was “certainly the most disturbing album release this year” End Of The Game - kills and it has a pretty progressive font for early 70's. Greens first solo record after leaving Fleetwood Mac and recorded a couple years after he took the dose of acid in munich that did him in. Album is a total improvisation with some random jazz musicians he met who were recording at the studio. Got this record at Red Onion in DC thanks Josh. Bottoms up. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">In The Skies - some spanish pressing. Came out in 79 and not as strange or intriguing as end of the game but has some real good songs on it. Fool No More is great. His pic on the back is real good too. </span></div>

Got Vol. 1(Mississippi Breakdown) and Vol. 2 (Dont You Remember The Time) of Traditional Fiddle Music Of Mississippi. Picked em up in Durham at Bull City and in San Francisco. Both jackets have to say - </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"Mississippi's place in the history of Country music has been well established, largely through the recognition of Jimmie Rodgers, its most famous native son, as the single most influential figure in rural American music. Moreover, no state is more prominent in the development of American Blues, having produced such musicians as Charley Patton, Son House, Skip James and John Hurt. However, another rich heritage of the Magnolia state has been, until recently, largely overlook; the fiddle band tradition.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To an ear attuned to the currently more popular string band styles of Virginia, North Caronlina and the Ozarks on one hand, and the more intricate and stylized Texas sound on the other, the fiddle bands of Mississippi may at first seem somewhat dry or plain. However, the subtlety and charm of the Mississippi tuens and styles are quickly appreciated after spending a little time with the music.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Because so few string bands from Mississippi actually recorded it, it would be a mistake to try and draw many conclusions from records about a "Mississippi style," or to generalize about certain features which at first seem noteworthy, for example, the absence of 5 string banjo and the relative scarcity of vocals. What can definitely be noted, though, is the great variety of individual styles and tunes that marked pre-World War II old time music in Mississippi, as in all other rural areas of the South and the Southwest. The music on County 528 and 529 ranges from the light and disciplined sound of the Leake County Revelers to the bluesy, deliverate and yet highly charged music of Floyd Ming & His Pep-Steppers; from the archaic and wild sounds of the Carter Brothers & Son to the haunting strains of Freeny's Barn Dance Band. The music on these two albums offers a fascinating glimpse into a great and colorful part of America's history. Most of all, it is a document of human expression that is as exciting today as it was when the original recordings were made some 45 to 50 years ago."</div>

This is one of my best buds Shanes song from 2006 maybe? I've been listening to it a lot lately so I thought Id put it up. We did a shit load of driving around a couple years ago and Ive always loved this song. I hope he is not mad at me for putting it on a blog.<br />

I like Jim Eanes. Ill put up more of his stuff later - but I like this record almost more than the early Blue Ridge Label stuff. The Legend Of The Girl On The Cliff kills it. Recorded in 76 through 79 in Roanoke and Salem VA but released in 86 by Rebel Records. Man they have a killer logo. Some real tear jerkers on this one. Found it in Flagstaff AZ in March - the saving grace of the day spent in higher elevation with headaches and bloody nose. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First time I heard this stuff was in Cleveland during a pretty heavy snowstorm in January at my friend Matt's house. He gave us pretty strong drinks and we sat around and zoned out. Was pumped to find this in the country rows at Academy in NY. If I ever get a dog Im going to name it Randy - and when that dog dies Ill get another and name it Early. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Cabin on the cover is of Early's birthplace in Lambsburg VA - back the back cover there is a nice personalized letter from WPAQ owner Ralph Epperson and notes on the side by his daughter talking about growing up singing with her dad. </div>

I saw Evan Miller O<span style="font-family: inherit;">pen for Raccoo-oo-oon in like 2006 in DC at the Black Cat. Hadnt really heard solo guitar stuff before that -he just played a nice 6 string set. I found this Record at Permanent in Chicago a couple years ago. Its great. Four longer tunes all spread out - I think mostly made with lap steel and synthesizer - B side is a great listen.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For a couple years the only song I heard from this record is the first one on the A side - found a copy in Rochester but my buddy got it first. Finally found one last month when I was in the UK. This came out on the Raccoon - that was Jesse Colin Youngs label for Warner Brothers - Havent heard a lot of the other releases and not into Youngbloods - but they did put out Hurleys Armchair Boogie and Hi Fi Snock so thats cool. I like this record. Some guy named Banana played pedal steel on it. Its kinda all over the place.</div>

I got the chance to go to the County/Rebel Records offices right outside of Charlottesville VA in April. Fun day looking through everything and talking. Around the time when we we're leaving we started looking through a box of LPs that were going up for sale and I asked about this one and bought it up from him. Ernest was from Powell Co. Ky and recorded 6 songs for Rich R Tone Records in the late 40's then turned his attention towards evangelism - 65 years in service and had a radio ministry for 55 years called Highway to Heaven. He passed at home in June of 2002 at the age of 88.</div>

So I was like cool. Turned out it was Thomas Jefferson Kayes band on Nashville's Good Medicine label (a subsidiary of Starday-King)? . He produced Link Wray - Gene Clark - and the first tune on this is all cried out - that was on Links Be What You Want To. The jacket to the LP is textured snakeskin and pasted illustration of band. Whole record is good except the 2nd song on A side - cheeseball Hound Dog. Thanks for Nothin', All Cried Out, and Hoe-Bus (pre recording to his first solo rec) are great. <br />

Neither of us can find any info on Lester on the internet. Only info on the disc is for P.O. Box 374 Travelers Rest S.C.

Good 4 am downer vibe from Cedar Falls Iowa - Early 70's? On his own Label Old English Records. 6 & 12 String - C.F. Martin. Couple cheesy cuts but its not a stinker. You Are The Reason is the best track. Dedicated to his closest friend "Ruby"
